I have no children, but I am a mother. I have never conceived a child, yet still I am a mother. I hadn’t envisioned myself to be on the cusp of 33, single, and managing a farm with livestock and a business on my own. I’ve always wanted to have children of my own, but I now realize that being a mother isn’t limited to humans raising humans.

Connecting with Canadian Field Team Member, Kate Schat, on family and homesteading, by encouraging her children to be regular contributors on the farm, Kate is instilling the family motto in the next generation, "work like dogs, eat like kings."

Since 1998, Read Across America has celebrated reading by building literacy programs to motivate and encourage kids across the U.S. to read. This year we are highlighting Saddle Up & Read, a non-profit organization led by Muck Field Team member, mom, cowgirl, and horse whisperer, Caitlin Gooch, and her mission to improve kids’ confidence in reading in her home state of North Carolina through live equestrian events that offer kids the opportunity to engage with and read to horses.
